Gastric Lap Band Surgery
The Lap-Band is a tool that should be considered as a last resort to weight loss. It is a very extensive and complicated procedure. This procedure is not a “quick fix” for weight loss. It is intended to help make your weight loss efforts (diet and exercise) more successful. This procedure will result in total lifestyle modifications (physical, mental, and dietary). This will require changes that will last a lifetime; thus, all aspects must be considered seriously.
Your level of commitment as well as education will steer you toward the best possible result.
You may obtain additional information at www.lapband.com or www.obesityhelp.com.

Patient Responsibilities
Please contact your insurance company to verify coverage for weight loss surgery, specifically laparoscopic banding. If you do not have coverage, you will need to speak to a patient account representative at the time of your initial consultation.
You will be required to bring your insurance card at the time of your initial evaluation.
Our facility will forward any pertinent medical records, letters of medical necessity and, if needed, your psychological and dietary evaluation to your insurance company to obtain pre-authorization for surgery.
Your Evaluation for the Gastric Lap-Band Surgery and What to Expect
Arrive 15 minutes prior to your actual appointment time. The evaluation is a lengthy process and special time has been set aside for you. If you are late by 5 minutes or more, your appointment will be rescheduled. If you need to change an appointment, please give at least a 24 hour notice.
Please note this is an evaluation only not a guarantee of surgery. The physician will determine your eligibility once your evaluation is complete.
Appropriate surgical candidates will be required to complete additional evaluations by different providers (Psychological, Dietary, and Pulmonary). Additional evaluations may be required based on your medical history.
Surgical candidates will have to pass all evaluations before surgery will be scheduled. Occasionally, additional testing or counseling may be recommended. This will need to be completed prior to scheduling surgery.
This evaluation is a lengthy process and can extend to a period of 2-3 months or more.
In addition, you will be required to attend a pre-operative support group meeting prior to your surgery.
It is strongly encouraged that you read the book Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding by Jessie H. Ahroni, PhD, ARNP. This book may be purchased at our office.
What Can I Expect After Surgery?
- You will be required to have repeated adjustments of the band approximately every 6-8 weeks for one year; then every 3 months for the second year; and finally 1 to 2 times per year thereafter.
- A very strict dietary guideline will be required following surgery. A commitment to maintain healthier eating habits will be needed to minimize excess weight gain.
- Exercise is very important. Following an exercise plan after surgery will help with your weight loss and recovery.
- Patients can usually expect to lose 50-60% of their excess body weight.
- Following the above guidelines will contribute to the overall success of your surgery. You cannot rely on the surgery alone for weight loss. Failure to adhere to the guidelines above may cause weight gain.
- We offer a monthly post-operative support group meeting. This is provided free of charge. We encourage everyone to attend for the continued support and education. Family members are always welcome.
